National Sports Day is observed every year on 29 August — the birthday of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand (29 August 1905). India first began observing this day in 2012. On this day, the President confers the Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dronacharya, and Dhyan Chand national sports awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This is not a public holiday in India — National Sports Day is not among India's three official national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti). This year (2026), 29 August falls on a Saturday.
National Sports Day is observed to highlight India's sporting culture, athletes' contributions, and the importance of fitness.
Who was Major Dhyan Chand: Major Dhyan Chand (born 29 August 1905 — died 3 December 1979) was a legendary Indian hockey player, known as "the Wizard of Hockey" for his extraordinary ball control. Over a career spanning 1926 to 1949, he led India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. At the 1928 Olympics, he scored 14 goals across 5 matches, making him the tournament's top scorer; across all three Olympics, he scored 37 goals in 12 matches. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
Sources differ on his total career goal count — some cite 570, while others simply describe hundreds of goals; the variance comes from different counting scopes (international matches only vs. his entire career), so no single firm figure is given here.
India first began observing National Sports Day in 2012, conferring that status on Major Dhyan Chand's birthday. India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports also uses the day to encourage citizens toward fitness and sports participation.
Every year on this day, the President confers the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (India's highest sporting honour), the Arjuna Award, the Dronacharya Award (for coaches), and the Dhyan Chand Award (lifetime achievement) on the country's best athletes and coaches at a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Schools, colleges, and sports institutions also organise sporting competitions and fitness activities on this day.
National Sports Day is not a public holiday in India. India has only three official national holidays — Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) — and National Sports Day is not among them. Schools and government offices function as usual on this day; the day's special character is limited to the awards ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan and a public call to take part in sports and fitness.
Like World Health Day and Earth Day, National Sports Day is also a fixed-date civic observance — like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, it is tied to a historical figure's birthday, but unlike that day, it is not a public holiday.
